![]() ![]() Avenged sevenfold so far away songwriter cracked#īoasting a grittier sound than previous releases, the self-titled/self-produced disc appeared in October 2007, debuting at number four on the Billboard Top 200 and spinning off the radio single "Almost Easy." The album also fared well in England, where three songs cracked the Top Five of the U.K. rock charts, and Avenged Sevenfold helped support the release by touring North America on the Taste of Chaos tour. Released in September 2008, the CD/DVD package Live in the LBC and Diamonds in the Rough captured the band during a tour stop in Long Beach. In 2009 the band announced plans to begin work on its third studio release. That same year, drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan passed away at the age of 28. In 2010 the band released Nightmare with replacement drummer Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater).For chart-topping heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold, a moment of truth came in December 2009. The drug-related death of James “The Rev” Sullivan caused the band to face creating its next album without its founding drummer and principal songwriter. The band responded with 2010’s “Nightmare,” which debuted at No. 1, was the band’s first chart-topper and sold gold and produced three Top 15 hard-rock hits, including the No. 1 “So Far Away” and the gold-selling title track. ![]() Then, when it came time to write the next album, Avenged Sevenfold didn’t want to be one of those bands that followed such a career-defining disc with another that sounds exactly the same. Whether Avenged Sevenfold achieved that with “Hail to the King,” to be released Aug. But if the title track is any indication, the disc may, indeed, rival “Nightmare.” Released three weeks ago, the shot of basic, bone-shaking hard rock already has broken the Mainstream Rock chart Top 5. Listeners can expect to hear that song and more when Avenged Sevenfold headlines Musikfest’s main Steel Stage Aug. 11 to close the 10-day Bethlehem festival. In a recent telephone call from Mount Pleasant, Mich., where the band was playing just its second show back after a break of more than a year, rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist Zacky Vengeance talked about the new disc, the story behind it, and the band without The Rev.
